Night Riders

Night Riders by neko.works is a game I came across looking around online. This is a motorcycle racing game made by neko.works that harks back to a simpler time in racing games. It is modern while still being vintage. Here is a game that will either bore you or make you appreciate its approach and its appeal. I am here to discuss another racing game here on "John's Blog Space" with Night Riders.

Night Riders game is apparently available for other systems, but I am referring to the OUYA version, since this is the version I've played and is the only version I know of for this game.

--- Night Riders ---

Not to be confused with the Atari 2600 game "Night Rider," "Night Riders" is a classic motorcycle racing game with a 3D look and feel. This game is nothing fancy- just twist the throttle, pump the brakes, and try to complete the race. You can race either individual tracks or run complete courses. The game is like a modern Hang-On in its look and feel. Most unique about this game is its minimalist look and feel. Every track in the game is devoid of any props on either outside of the track. Most classic racing games in its mold usually have stuff like walls, signs, trees, rocks, buildings, and things like that on the outside of the track. This game has NOTHING on the sides or over the track. Not even Start/Finish lines, checkpoint markers, or tunnels are in the game! This game is absolutely minimalist in its execution. The lack of details can mean either a great experience or a boring one. The only things you have to worry about in this game are clearing the checkpoints, avoid ramming into other riders, and keeping your bike on the road. To race the other tracks, you need to buy the full version of "Night Riders" on your OUYA. The game includes one song that's very cool. If you have music on your OUYA, you can actually listen to your own music in the game granted it is in the same folder as the Night Riders game on your OUYA. So that is a little bonus for you in playing this game.

My Review of "Night Riders."

Night Riders by neko.works may seem very boring in today's landscape of racing games. However, this game has a beautiful appeal to it which makes it... well, beautiful. This game proves that even games devoid of various details can still be a great racing game. The graphics are beautiful despite the simplicity of the riders and the environments in this game. Night Riders still plays and functions as smoothly as you want a racing game to be. While it may not have the fun factor of the Hang-On series (which I think this game really harks to), this is a racing game you have to learn to appreciate despite its simplicity. You can play much better and much more detailed racing games. However, when it comes to a racing game most people would consider boring, this game actually has a look and feel that you eventually learn to appreciate and admire. It is like looking at a piece of art in which you don't appreciate right away, but you eventually become fond of once you think about it and envision whatever message is being sent. "Night Riders" is like that piece of art you eventually appreciate. Despite its simplicity, it most importantly delivers in game play. Think of it as a minimalist Hang-On.

Thunder Desert GP

John B. Marine | 2:42 PM | | Be the first to comment!
My first OUYA game review is here on John's Race Space! Thunder Desert GP from Foppygames is a completely free game for the OUYA where you try to complete ten laps around a course. There is nothing in the way of simulation-type racing. This is just old-school, old-fashioned, classic racing. Is it any good, though? I'm going to offer my thoughts on this game in this blog post.

Here is my first post of 2015 for "John's Race Space." Happy new year, everyone!

--- Thunder Desert GP ---

Thunder Desert GP is a game created by Foppygames. It was released in April 2014 exclusively for the OUYA gaming console. You ride on a motorcycle around one of two tracks. The game can be thought of as a hybrid of Pole Position and Hang-On. Only difference is that you are not qualifying for anything, and you aren't racing any point-to-point races. One track is in the desert, and another is run in a forest setting. The main goal is to try to complete ten laps around the two courses. Even if you don't manage to complete the ten lap challenge, you still can earn recognition for completing nine laps (silver) or eight laps (bronze). Go for the gold! Thunder Desert GP features an 8-bit musical score from coda for added nostalgia.

Unless you are just not a great racing gamer, it shouldn't be too difficult to even clear at least three laps. Each time you cross the finish line, you get progressively less time to complete the rest of the race. Keep crashes to a minimum. If you can, allow yourself to crash no more than twice. The good thing about this game is that you don't have to worry about shifting gears like with the aforementioned Pole Position and Hang-On. All you need to use are the throttle and the brakes.

My "Thunder Desert GP" Review.

Thunder Desert GP is just a classic racing game. It is a modern retro-type racing game that is very fun. I said this game is more like a hybrid of Pole Position and Hang-On. In my view, this game is more like Pole Position with motorcycles. It plays and feels this way, and in no way am I talking down about this game. Thunder Desert GP is completely free. Maybe you wish there were more tracks or something, but this game is great. I even personally sent a Tweet on Twitter to the developer saying that I rated "Thunder Desert GP" five stars on my OUYA. If you just love old-school racing, you likely won't be disappointed with this title.

That's all from me. I hope you enjoyed this review of mine!

I hope I've entertained you a bit with my review of "Thunder Desert GP." There is hardly anything to complain about with this game. That is... unless you think the OUYA is just a terrible console that isn't even worth playing. At the end of the day, I still have a job to do here- blog about racing games and driving games. Have a great day/night, and thank you for reading! Take care and be well.
