Wacky Wheels

John B. Marine | 1:47 AM | | Be the first to comment!
(UPDATED: September 17, 2018)

The 1994 PC game Wacky Wheels put you behind the wheel of some wicked karts driven by eight wacky creatures. This kart racing game was created by Beavis Soft (no relation to "Beavis and Butthead," mind you) and published by Apogee. All bets are off when this cast of racers go at it. This blog post takes a look at "Wacky Wheels" and if it is worth your time.

NOTE: This blog post is based on my playing of the Version 1.1 Shareware Release of this game.

LATEST UPDATE(S)/REVISION(S):

SEP 17 2018 - this review has been updated to include notes on the Registered version.

Wacky Wheels

Wacky Wheels
^ from: (YouTube) - What happens when you give wild animals a go-kart? Play this game and find out!

From the same prototype of "Wacky Kart," Beavis Soft came along with "Wacky Wheels" and was published by Apogee. Yes- the same Apogee that has come along with many classic PC games that basically dominated most of the early-mid 1990s. This game was released in 1994 and offers up frantic kart racing action. Each of the characters used in this game are wild animals. "Wacky Wheels" offers 15 tracks spread across three levels of difficulty. You start off with the Bronze Wheels events and work your way up to the Gold Wheels events. Apparently, there are 15 extra tracks you can also race on in addition to the original set of races. You can also compete in various Battle Mode competitions on six different courses. Those Battle Mode stages also include six additional stages for a total of 12.

From my own personal experience, I've played the shareware version countless times. The Shareware version only gives you the Bronze Wheels tracks, the first three Battle Zones, and four of the eight characters. The full version includes three championships as well as access to all eight characters (instead of the four in the Shareware version). The complete package features a total of 30 tracks and 12 Battle Mode stages.

Characters.

Meet the crew...

• Tigi - a tiger.
• Razer - a shark.
• Morris - a moose.
• Peggles - a pelican.
• Blombo* - an elephant.
• Ringo* - a raccoon.
• Uno* - a panda.
• Sultan* - a camel.

* = not available in Shareware version.

For what I know, there is no real competitive advantage as to who you choose as your racer. You are almost basically choosing a character on personal preference.

Racing.

There are five modes to choose from. Here is a description of each...

• Amateur Class - the easiest level of competition.
• Pro Class - the normal level of competition.
• Champion Class - the hardest level of competition.
• Time Trial - go for the best time or practice your racing skill on any track.
• Kid Mode - accelerating and braking is done automatically; all you have to do is steer the kart and use the items.

Once you select a mode, you can select whether you want to run a six-lap race, an eight-lap race, or the maximum ten laps. You can choose to race with 6 horsepower engines or 12 horsepower engines. The latter is obviously faster, but you may want to go with the 6hp engines if you are a mere novice. More points are offered at the higher difficulty levels.

To advance to the next round, you must place third or better. If you fail to advance, you must use a continue. The game is over when all continues have been exhausted.

Two-Player Action.

So you want to bring along a friend to race against? You can compete in two-player races or do a two-player shootout. The racing simply pits you against another human opponent. The two-player shootout is a Battle style mode where it is you vs. a human opponent. The goal can be set in multiples of five and can range from a score of 5 to a score of 20. Whomever reaches the goal score first wins.

Wacky Duck Shoot.

If you want to take your aggressions out by shooting hogs on ducks, then try the Wacky Duck Shootout. There are two ducks- Wacky and Digger. The regular Wacky duck takes just one hit to defeat. Digger (who wears a military helmet) takes two shots to defeat. Try to take out as many ducks as possible within the two-minute time limit.

Notes.

Here are a few notes about Wacky Wheels...

• Get the hogs scattered across the track to use as your weapons against your opposition. These can be used to attack rival drivers in racing modes and the ducks in the Battle modes. One thing to note, I mean hogs as in hedgehogs. That's what they are in this game. They can be used at any time granted you don't have a secondary weapon on hand.

• It is possible for you to whack something so hard that you end up flying off of your kart. Once this happens, you must use one of your continues. If you run out of continues, the game is over.

Now with all of this said, it's time to give a review.

Wacky Wheels: Final Thoughts

Wacky Wheels is a great-looking game with some pretty frenzied racing action. A great job was done to offer up a crazy racing experience. This game is closer in quality and experience to Super Mario Kart than Skunny Kart (that I reviewed here on "John's Race Space"). It was almost as if Beavis Soft offered up an experience like Skunny Kart, only better. This was a game I enjoyed in my younger days albeit playing the Shareware version of it. This is definitely a game to check out if you simply enjoy classic Mode 7 type racing games. I don't think you will be disappointed unless your standards for racing games far exceed what Wacky Wheels offers.

Here is a video look at the game I reviewed in this post:

That's all for this post, but in case you're interested...

Wacky Wheels HD (Bonus Section!)

A few years ago, a developer called Cascadia Games brought back Wacky Wheels and given it a high-definition makeover. This new-age Wacky Wheels, called "Wacky Wheels HD" can be checked out on Steam if you're on Steam. This game includes 20 tracks and nine characters (one more character than the original Wacky Wheels). I didn't note too much difference between this 21st Century Wacky Wheels and the classic game. The only obvious difference is the sharper-quality graphics. Besides these things, one thing that turns me off about Wacky Wheels HD is these sort of farting sounds. A bit too immature for my tastes and takes away from the fun and (for lack of a better term) wacky racing action.

Here is a sample of this HD remake of Wacky Wheels:

^ "Wacky Wheels Greenlight Trailer"

For more information on this remake, visit the Steam page for Wacky Wheels HD. I may do a review on Wacky Wheels HD if I somehow decide to give it a try.

Skunny Kart

John B. Marine | 11:53 PM | | Be the first to comment!
Released in 1994, Skunny Kart takes you on a wacky journey featuring eight characters (including Skunny himself) from the world of Skunny and a world of tracks. This game proves you CAN make a Super Mario Kart clone on PC. It was revolutionary for its time for PC users. Is the game any good, though? Find out in this blog post!

--- Skunny Kart ---

Skunny Kart
^ from: (YouTube) - Get ready for Mode 7-style racing with Skunny Kart!

According to something I read online through my YouTube friend CuteFloor, Skunny Kart is a game that came about based on a prototype called "Wacky Kart," which would eventually lead to the creation of "Skunny Kart" by Copysoft and "Wacky Wheels" by Beavis Soft and Apogee. Skunny Kart is basically Skunny's clone of Super Mario Kart. It was believed that the PC was incapable of producing Mode 7 style graphics like what the Super Nintendo was capable of. This was proven untrue as Skunny Kart was developed as richly as possible to deliver a graphical experience like what Super Mario Kart was capable of. The game features Skunny the Squirrel and seven other characters taking each other on in go-karts. This is a racing game sure to drive you crazy (no pun intended).

Characters.

You can choose between eight different characters. The characters are designated mainly by their speed attributes- slow, medium, and fast. This essentially determines their characteristics as you race through the game's many courses.

• Potame (Slow)
• Ragi (Medium)
• Nacard (Slow)
• Gondra (Medium)
• Golfi (Medium)
• Skunny (Fast)
• Pussy (Slow)
• Handbag (Fast)

In most racing games of this nature, characters would mostly be divided by weight. And usually, the heaviest characters are usually the slowest but are able to wrestle around lighter characters. The lightest characters usually have a slight speed advantage but can be easily thrown around by heavier opponents. In the middle are the medium weight characters.

Racing.

I played the demo to Skunny Kart in my own experience. I will try to talk you through the basic aspects of Skunny Kart.

The primary mode of play in Skunny Kart is in the races. There are seven different Cups for you to participate in, each with five tracks. Unless you failed Math or aren't a Math major, that's 35 tracks you'll be racing. You can compete in Battle Mode with three different Battle zones each with five locations. That comes out to 15 different courses. So in all, you have a grand total of 50 levels. This means you'll be quite busy indulging yourself in the action Skunny Kart has to provide.

The seven Cups all feature five different tracks with many different challenges.

• Australia Cup
• Europe Cup
• America Cup
• Japan Cup
• Africa Cup
• Germany Cup
• UK Cup

While each of the cups are named after certain international regions, you won't see any famous landmarks or anything indigenous to these Cups. So for example, you won't see the Sydney Opera House or Ayers Rock in the Australia Cup. Each race event in Skunny Kart is a six-lap race with eight competitors to a track (including yours). To advance through each stage of each Cup, you must finish 4th or better. You are granted three chances to clear each Cup. If you fail to clear every round and have exhausted all three chances, you must retire from that Cup and try again.

You can collect items during races to give yourself an advantage... or a disadvantage. Don't expect Mario Kart insanity, but a lot of race-altering items are available at your disposal.

One thing to be careful of... you may win a race, but not have enough points to remain high in a championship setting. Some advice you may want to take is to pick up the Bonus coins on the track to help give yourself extra points to win each of the Cups. Those extra amount of points can be crucial if you're trying to win a championship. Finish as high up the standings as possible, but make sure to pick up bonus coins to make sure you don't end up placing lower than where you finished the race. For example, you may win a race, but second place may have picked up a bonus coin or two to gain extra points. Despite winning the race, you may eventually end up finishing second. So make sure to collect those bonus coins to ensure you gain the most possible points towards winning the championship.

Another thing to worry about is making sure to collect the blue clock powerups. Those blue clocks will remove five seconds off of your final time. Try not to get the red clocks- which ADDS five seconds to your total time. Remember- you may win the race or place in a certain position, but someone you finish ahead of may have a better total time than yours, and you may end up placing one (or possibly more) positions down!

Remember these hints and do whatever it takes to win!

Battle.

Skunny Kart includes three zones each with five areas. Battle Mode is a simple mode where you must defeat your opponents by popping their balloons. You destroy those balloons by hitting them with missiles or self-inflicting attacks by running into bombs and such. Once one has no balloons remaining, that character is defeated.

Now on to some Final Thoughts.

Skunny Kart: Final Thoughts

Skunny Kart represents something a lot of PC gamers think would never happen- a classic Mario Kart-style game with Mode 7 scaling and frantic action. While the original Super Mario Kart is a better game, this one is a more-than-worthy PC kart racing game. It may lack a lot of the fun that made Super Mario Kart a classic, but this is not a game to disregard or push aside. Only thing I think would make it better is being able to change up the controls for the game. This is otherwise a very fun game.

Gran Turismo SPORT: Unveil Impressions

John B. Marine | 11:44 PM | | | Be the first to comment!
The Gran Turismo Sport Unveiling Event in London recently shown off the progress of Gran Turismo Sport. With little in the way of news previously, we now have plenty of ideas on how GT Sport has progressed in its development. We also can speculate on what could be with Gran Turismo Sport and what it has to offer. This blog post offers my thoughts on GT Sport based on what this Unveil event has shown.

NOTE: This blog post pertains to thoughts and impressions on Gran Turismo Sport after the recent unveiling ceremony. This is NOT any kind of review.

Gran Turismo Sport: Unveiling Event Impressions

It was May 19-20, 2016 that Gran Turismo Sport was unveiled in London, England, UK. To identify this post, I'll use this image (or find another one in case this one doesn't show):

Gran Turismo Sport
^ from: (YouTube) - Are you ready for a ride like this in the Gran Turismo universe?

Those bestowed with a PlayStation 4 will have themselves a Gran Turismo to look forward to. After many feel Gran Turismo 6 was completely boring and basically righted the wrongs of Gran Turismo 5, a number of fans feel the series is fading in appeal and in fun. Along comes Gran Turismo Sport to maybe bring back any lost fans and welcome new ones. The Gran Turismo Sport atmosphere features some influence from the FIA (Federacion International d' Automobile). In fact, there is even a Gran Turismo championship sanctioned by the FIA. This may end up being one of the true e-Sports today.

So before I go any further, I want you to view this video (or click on the link below the video):

^ "Gran Turismo Sport Gameplay Trailer Captured on PS4"

If Polyphony Digital feels they have lost a good amount of their audience for as long as Gran Turismo 6 has been around, then I feel a huge chunk of their fan base is going to return with GT Sport. A lot of what has been featured in this trailer is good indication Gran Turismo is anything but dead. I do love the TV-style presentation. You can surely complain about the same style sounds, but the look and feel of this title seems to be quite impressive. Some may even say this is what at least the racing aspect of Gran Turismo should have been from the very start.

This game looks to be a real evolution of the GT series even outside of the racing. A sad bit for some of us is that the game will feature some 130 or so cars, but some new machines will be featured. Among one of the newer cars featured? How about the ugly Ferrari LaFerrari (sorry- I don't like this car's looks all that much)? The game will incorporate a lot of different kinds of racing on tarmac and off-road. It is also said to have many different environments for taking pictures including various locales worldwide and various scenes. You could take fancy pictures with scenes such as Mt. Fuji in the background or even photograph your car with the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

If there is one thing I noted from the trailer, it was the inclusion of a livery editor. I felt like Gran Turismo 5 started something that would slowly get better. You could re-paint certain cars in GT5 by collecting paint colors. Gran Turismo 6 had it much better by allowing you to paint any car almost any color based on whatever colors you picked up. GT Sport has itself a livery editor. To some GT veterans, this is a feature we've long been looking for.

More detailed opinions of mine will be featured later in this blog post. For now, let's go to some talking points.

GT Sport: Talking Points

Now for some talking points.

Northern Isle Raceway?

When Gran Turismo 5 featured NASCAR, it was a sign that stock car racing was to be embraced in the GT series. Looking at this fantasy oval makes me wonder if maybe Polyphony Digital is a little more serious on trying to expand upon the oval racing appeal. Northern Isle Raceway is kind of like a fantasy Bristol Motor Speedway, only with less severe banking. It is like a Bristol that almost rides like Martinsville or Dover. Or maybe it's just Bristol but without the Bristol Motor Speedway licensing. This would complete the stock car racing package as the series doesn't have a proper short oval. Now, we seem to have that short oval with the inclusion of Northern Isle Raceway. Then too, you stock car fans can probably argue Gran Turismo could also use a one-mile oval in addition to what is already offered.

Tokyo Expressway.

I can already sense this course could be popular among online gamers and the highway battle set. Of course, this has to be at night to really be fun. I'm pretty sure you won't be battling the Thirteen Devils, 12 Zodiac, or even Kingdom Twelve though. I almost want to imagine racing this course kind of like racing the classic Ridge Racer games. I like it.

National Pride.

Individual success is always admirable, but there is NOTHING like playing for your country. I always feel you can gauge your performance best when you take on people from all over the world that specialize or compete in the same field that you do. What Gran Turismo Sport has to offer is a great platform for you to take on a world of opposition. I surely would represent the stars and stripes of the United States of America in my racing.

Only one thing concerns me here, mostly based on what I thought about with some people from the United Kingdom. Some folks from the United Kingdom don't want to affiliate themselves as competitors from the UK, but instead list themselves as racers from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and other places. This could be a problem with a few other places, but I've only seen this kind of problem with some United Kingdom folks.

More Cars?

The production cars and race cars are nice, but I want to imagine more kinds of racing, namely formula racing series (not exactly F1). Many people immediately will think Formula 1, but think of other series like GP2, GP3, Formula 3 (which I love), and even the Formula E series. It may also be possible to have something like the FIA World Touring Car Championship. I surely wouldn't mind some proper touring car action in the GT realm. Since GT Sport will also feature off-road racing, you can't forget about the FIA World Rally Championship. We could also speculate on if we'll get something like FIA World Rallycross. For some people, why not? Most of the rally racing us GT gamers have done is mostly on closed courses. It probably wouldn't be too tough to include proper rallycross racing ranging from the heat races to running Joker Laps.

If you're going to feature the FIA, why not sweeten the offer with more kinds of racing? Why not offer more kinds of racing machines? Some real formula racing machines outside of the Red Bull prototypes would surely be nice. What would be an absolute long shot would be the Gran Turismo series having a kind of racing never before experienced in a GT game: supertruck (as in the big rig trucks) racing, like with the FIA European Truck Racing series. Imagine trying to wrestle those big trucks on a race track! The FIA also sanctions drag racing, so imagine proper drag racing in this game through FIA drag racing. The extreme would be either the aforementioned Formula 1 or perhaps even endurance racing with the FIA World Endurance Championship.

I do realize this is not a proper simulation of all things FIA. However, I do think it would be interesting to have many more kinds of cars and many more kinds of racing.

Rules and Race Types?

When I saw one of the videos of GT Sport in action, I noted moments like Full Course Cautions. In certain racing games, screwing up the races with certain flags and rules can make the racing less fun. Even incidents not your fault end up getting YOU in trouble. I even played some of the EA Sports NASCAR titles to where some random incident ends up bringing out the Full Course Caution. I surely remember this playing "ToCA Race Driver 3." Gran Turismo doesn't have thug AI like a lot of Codemasters racing games I've played, but I'm sure it won't be that bad in GT Sport.

With race types, it is possible full race weekends or certain race rules would apply. For instance, you could have a race weekend that consists of multiple races or even certain rules. A rules example would be that the finishing order of Race 1 of a two-race event will be reversed for Race 2. So if you finished 3rd out of 16 cars in Race 1, your starting position for Race 2 will be 14th. We may even have a sprint race followed by a feature race.

The Gran Turismo We've Been Waiting For?

If you saw the video, you may have noted a livery editor. You may have seen all the different motorsports rules and racing and such. Gran Turismo Sport really seems like the Gran Turismo many of us have long wanted. Maybe this isn't like a traditional Gran Turismo, but there is definite promise this title will blow away all of us. There will still be a Gran Turismo 7. On the other hand, it seems quite like GT Sport may be the best spinoff of the GT series. Whether or not this will be the Gran Turismo we've been waiting for will likely be determined once GT Sport is released proper.

This is NOT Gran Turismo 7. I do wish the more favorable elements of GT Sport will trickle down into GT7, though. What this game has to offer for real will have to be pondered upon for when GT Sport is released proper.

Are there any other talking points I maybe have missed? Feel free to share in a comment.

GT Sport: Final Thoughts

Please remember these Final Thoughts of mine are based on a game still in development.

Based on what I've seen and what I've read, "Gran Turismo Sport" is what the racing side of Gran Turismo should have been from the very start. That feel of real racing environment along with some competitive racing action is why I think GT Sport is worth at least a look-see. I've had no problem with the casual style races in Gran Turismo games. While I don't want the GT series to be like any of the Codemasters racing games or any of the SimBin racing titles, the Gran Turismo series could benefit more with a more proper racing style environment. GT Sport looks to offer this sort of edge along with a handful of facilities and features to make this package incredible. Just the idea of a livery editor makes me feel like I could actually construct my own racing team within the game. That alone will help me to feel intrigued and connected as a motorsports enthusiast. I don't have a PlayStation 4, but this is surely a title I will want to get my hands on once it is released.

Most importantly, whatever GT Sport brings, I want to see the finer elements of GT Sport to go into Gran Turismo 7. The combination of traditional Gran Turismo elements along with whatever GT Sport provides should make Gran Turismo 7 perhaps the best Gran Turismo ever.

In Case You're Interested...

This post shows my initial thoughts on Gran Turismo SPORT, before we knew about these details from the unveil ceremony: Gran Turismo SPORT Thoughts (John's Race Space).

Those are my thoughts on Gran Turismo Sport as of this unveil ceremony.

A Gran Turismo Confession (Bonus Section!)

I haven't mentioned too many Gran Turismo topics lately because I admittedly have not really played much Gran Turismo since the slow news of GT Sport and the somewhat slow buzz of Gran Turismo 6. I will sort of admit I have been hoping GT Sport will maybe re-ignite my GT interests. Of course, it isn't that I gave up on the Gran Turismo series or anything. Let's just say I've entered a lull as a Gran Turismo fan.

Again- I don't have a PlayStation 4. If I did have one, I surely will get GT Sport when I get a chance to get the game.

That's it for this post. Let's start a discussion, if you like...

Are you looking forward to Gran Turismo Sport? Or do you think the game needs a lot more for you to be convinced?

GT Sport is told to be released sometime in mid-November 2016. So let's be sure this baby comes in around that time for us racing fans to enjoy it to the fullest. Thank you for reading! Take care and be well.

Retro Racing

John B. Marine | 7:53 PM | | Be the first to comment!
Retro Racing for iOS and Android has been around since 2012. Top-down racing has never looked better with this game from British developer Mr Qwak Limited. My blog post on Retro Racing will fill you in on what this game has to offer.

NOTE: This review is based on my playing experience of this game on the OUYA.

Retro Racing

Let's talk Retro Racing!

Retro Racing
^ from: play.google.com - Can you climb your way through the pack to claim victory in Retro Racing?

Remember when racing games weren't about extreme realism, deep levels of tuning, bad acting, and ticked off trolls that can't drive worth s***? Oops! Pardon my language! Retro Racing apparently harks back to a couple of past top-down racers. In fact, Amiga Racers like Nitro (Psygnosis) and ATR (Team 17) were inspirations in Retro Racing. The goal is simple- try to pass all of your opposition to claim victory. How you do so depends on your ability to race consistently with the various powerups and the use of shortcuts. One or two players can enjoy the action here.

The Tracks.

The game features 18 tracks. The first three are free. To advance to the next race, you must finish 3rd or better. You can always head back to a track you've already cleared to try to achieve a better finish.

The Cars.

There are six cars to choose from. To race all the cars, you need to purchase Retro Racing. You will otherwise be stuck with the first three cars in this list.

• Team Red: S-2, A-2, T-1
• Team Blue: S-2, A-1, T-2
• Team Green: S-1, A-3, T-2
• Stallion F1 (must purchase game to use): S-4, A-2, T-2
• Electic Fox (must purchase game to use): S-2, A-4, T-3
• Shadow (must purchase game to use): S-3, A-4, T-2

The Racing.

Races feature a total of either 6 or 8 cars. You will find a number of powerups on the track that will increase your car's performance through the course of the race. You will see icons on the track such as these:

• S - speed boost.
• A - acceleration.
• T - tires.
• N - nitro.

Remember that you must place third or better to advance to the next race. Look for shortcuts and extra roads to gain some advantages on the track.

Now for a review on Retro Racing.

Retro Racing: Final Thoughts

Retro Racing is a bare bones racing game offering simplistic top-down racing. In today's gaming landscape, someone may find a game like this to be completely boring. There is surely a great deal of challenge despite this game being so simple. This game is surely worth a try if you just favor classic top-down racing.

Video Preview and More Information.

Here is a preview of this game. I mentioned I played the OUYA version, this video features (I'm assuming) the iOS version.

^ Official Retro Racing Launch Trailer

So what do YOU think? If you like it, go get this game for Android, iOS, Windows, and OUYA. You can find links to the game from the developer's home page here: Retro Racing - Mr Qwak.
