Thoughts on 20 Years of Gran Turismo

John B. Marine | 11:15 PM | | | | | | | | | | Be the first to comment!
Gran Turismo was born December 23, 1997. Its impact 20 years since has been outstanding. Many people (myself included) were educated with cars and racing through Gran Turismo. This post is my look at the Gran Turismo series mostly with commentary.

Say whatever you want about Gran Turismo. Regardless, Gran Turismo has been the standard by which racing games are judged by. I think Gran Turismo has made racing simulation accessible without being overly hardcore. Ever tried so powerslide in the corners only to spin out? Didn't think your car was indestructible when you did longer races? Gran Turismo brought realism to console racing games, though not hardcore style realism.

As with any popular series, there will be the fair share of haters. Some of the biggest gripes many people had with Gran Turismo was a lack or many more great manufacturers and damage. There have been countless types who felt Gran Turismo had severe Japanese bias. It was as if people thought Polyphony Digital cared more about Japanese kei cars and certain Japanese sports cars more than the likes of Ferrari and Porsche. Other felt there was a lack of damage that really prevented the GT games from really being realistic. Others could also complain about sound quality of GT games. There were many who criticized the sound quality, even going to the level of calling GT as "The Real Vacuum Simulator." The AI of GT games has also been an element people loathed about GT.

No matter what you think about Gran Turismo, it has done a lot as a racing game franchise as any other before it. Other racing games have come along and have bettered what GT did. It still doesn't mean GT failed to make a mark in the racing game world. We lived with a lot of things in Gran Turismo most other racing games have had in them. GT still remains an accessible and realistic racing game. While it isn't a hardcore sim, people still play and enjoy this great series of games. Many more games after GT1 tried to cash in on the same formula to different levels of success. Even Top Gear- yes, BBC's Top Gear- called Gran Turismo as "the greatest racing game of all time." And if you haven't taken the time to give Gran Turismo games a try, now wouldn't be a bad time to try.

So now that Gran Turismo has been around for over 20 years now, one can only wonder what the future will hold. All I know is that a lot of the excitement for racing games wouldn't have been possible without the Gran Turismo series. That even includes "John's Race Space." So we owe a debt of gratitude for what Gran Turismo has brought as well as making developers step their game up trying to be at or better Gran Turismo.

I am actually sorry I didn't release this on the day of Gran Turismo's birthday (Central Standard Time). However, at least I got it out there and not let this post just sit on my hard drive doing nothing. So you all keep motoring in the Gran Turismo series! Thank you for reading! Take care and be well.

John B. Marine | 9:06 PM | | Be the first to comment!
"John's Race Space" FINALLY got 100K views all-time! The blog that began life as "John's Gran Turismo Space" in November 2010 evolved into a blog on all racing games. I picked up loads of views from people worldwide. My thanks go out to everyone who helped make this blog popular and useful. This blog post is not about any racing game. All I want to do here is to offer my own words to all of my readers.

--- John's Race Space: 100,000 Views! ---

Let me begin by saying that I am pleased "John's Race Space" (formerly "John's Gran Turismo Space") has gotten over 100K views. With its slow growth, I honestly never thought this humble blog would get so many views. This blog is nearing its 5th birthday as it was established in November 2010. There was a point where I initially just ran out of topics to come up with for Gran Turismo and Tourist Trophy for this blog. So in its evolution, I decided to make this my blog for discussing all things racing games. Why so? I love racing games. I know I am not the only one, and it feels good to find other people who like racing games, right? This is a special accomplishment for my blogging work. Under the Blogger/Blogspot platform, this is currently the third-ever blog I created that has received six-figure views all-time. Blogs take effort; successful blogs take effort and dedication. It is a feeling of being determined to assure an international audience of just how amazing and how much an institution a blog can be. In addition, I hate looking at my own blog just to bump up the view count. I can be cheap at times, but I am not THAT cheap. I want to earn as much as I can.

You probably know where this is all going. Either I could have retired this blog as it is, or I could have stretched out its usefulness by extending the range of topics for it. The formula worked for "John's Blog Space"- which began life as my Gran Turismo blog before I made it about anything and everything. I chose to take this blog from "John's Gran Turismo Space" to "John's Race Space." Its URL and heritage are still with the Gran Turismo series, but I wanted to make this blog so much more than what its roots offered. The focus of my blogging work here on JRS is simply to offer my racing/driving game fans a place where I offer my own opinions about racing games and driving games. I am not trying to build the definitive blog on racing games, but I am hoping I have offered a reputable blog with unique and valuable chatter on racing games. People- like you reading this blog right now- have helped contribute this this blog being useful and enjoyable.

I work alone with my blogging work because I feel only I can push my blog(s) in a favorable direction that I'll be most happy with. I could probably allow guest blogging or whatever, but I feel I am the one best equipped to push my blogs in a positive direction. I rarely get any support or opinions from any loyal readers. So therefore, I just keep pushing my blog(s) any way I please in hopes I can keep up the good work. That even includes discussing racing games here.

What's Next?

There are a number of racing/driving games I haven't mentioned, reviewed, or have thoughts on. I haven't even introduced my "Elements of Racing Games" series from "John's Blog Space" to "John's Race Space" yet. A lot of reviews on racing games from "John's Blog Space" still haven't been introduced to "John's Race Space" yet- and I'd love to introduce them to my audience. Ever since wanting to expand this blog's usefulness and its range of topics, there are still MANY things I have either yet to discuss or introduce. Believe me- I have NO shortage of topics for this blog or any of my others. The only thing holding me back is really coming up with given material to actually make things happen.

I put thought into all of my blog posts. I don't just come up with posts just to show that I am alive and just to keep a blog updated. I believe everything I publish has to have value beneficial to the Internet and to my audience. Very few things are truly random about my blogging work. You now know about my dedication and how much I value what I do.

To All of My Loyal Readers and Fans...

100000 Views John's Race Space
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

That is all for this post.

I actually tried to wait until my view count actually surpassed 100,000 hits before releasing this blog post. I hated that I was slowly picking up views when I thought I finally surpassed that 100K view mark... only to find out only so few views were collected between different time intervals. The wait until finally reaching that 100K view mark was agonizing. However, I made it! Thank you all again for making this possible for my blog.

If there are any racing/driving games or any features you want to see mentioned, be sure to contact me online. I may feature your suggestion(s) in a future post here on "John's Race Space." You may also contact me on any topics you want to see in any of my blogs. Regardless, I am pleased to get this many views for "John's Race Space." Thank you for reading!

The Future of JGTS

John B. Marine | 12:43 PM | Be the first to comment!
For my Gran Turismo fans, I am sorry I have not updated this blog much. I began "John's Gran Turismo Space" with providing a continuous supply of Gran Turismo and Tourist Trophy related material. I am still interested in the upcoming Gran Turismo 6. However, I haven't done much updating. There is also another reason why I have been feeling a bit down on myself updating JGTS. You see, I am not good often times at sticking to certain things. I created JGTS to focus solely on the Gran Turismo series. But at the same time, I didn't want to turn a niche-type blog into something outside of its niche. My main blog, "John's Blog Space" began as a Gran Turismo blog before I decided to blog about almost anything else that crossed my mind. And the rest is history, right?

I want to assure everyone that I do more blogging than just in my GT blog. I love the Gran Turismo series, and while I sometimes try to incorporate other racing games into this blog, part of me wants to make this still about the Gran Turismo series... but open the floor to other racing games. So JGTS may essentially still be about Gran Turismo and Tourist Trophy... while also featuring elements of and other material from other racing games. I don't want to do this because I've already established JGTS as a GT-only blog. So why would I really open the floor to other material besides what I initially marketed this blog to be? I would feel like I would have cheated a lot of my readers/visitors by going in a different direction than a blog's intended purpose.

So therefore, I have reached a certain decision regarding the future of this blog. Disregard the next section if you are not reading the full blog post. What? Did you think I was going to show my announcement from the main page? Think again! :P If you want to read the announcement I have to make, make sure you are reading the full blog post by clicking on "Read More" if you are not viewing this full post. Gran Turismo 6 Discussion Now Open on JGTS

John B. Marine | 5:12 PM | | Be the first to comment!
With Gran Turismo 6 in the works, I prepared this post to let my JGTS readers know that I will make a concerted effort to discuss elements of GT6. Because let's face it- GT5 has really been a disappointment. I love GT5, but it could have been much better. So I will be using JGTS (and maybe even YouTube) to discuss elements of GT6 to help offer my own vision of what GT6 needs to be in helping move past GT5's disappointments.

Most of what I publish regards speculation, ideas, commentary, and more. Those who follow my YouTube channel, "JohnMarineTube," may be familiar with what ideas I've made mention to. Things will be no different here on John's Gran Turismo Space. I want my blog readers to share and comment on my material here in regards to GT6. I value all of my readers worldwide. It was my effort to blog about the Gran Turismo series when I started off on John's Blog Space. Then, it was my continued passion to make a proper blog regarding the Gran Turismo series when I moved over most of my JBS material over here to JGTS. I want to continue this because I know I have fans who vastly appreciate my tireless efforts.

If there are elements you want me to discuss about GT6 or want my opinions about, message me on Facebook or contact me via E-Mail. I will try to make every attempt to address each thing you're speculative of if I see topics that interest me.

As an off-topic note, I will re-work this blog's layout a little bit to be more consistent with the other blogs of mine. I want to make it easier to edit in case I need to edit elements of its layout. Check the latest news and notices for more info.

Would YOU Have Waited?

John B. Marine | 12:58 PM | | Be the first to comment!
In the development of Gran Turismo 5, there was word that Kazunori Yamauchi wanted another two years to develop GT5. He wanted FIA GT and DTM to be included in GT5. Would YOU have have waited an extra two years so both series could be in GT5? Or would you feel agonized by having to wait just a little bit longer for GT5? This blog post shares my ideas on this matter.

--- FIA GT and DTM in GT5: Would YOU Have Waited? ---

Allow me to begin with a picture to help set the tone here (along with the customary Amethyst Purple gradient background and Moonlight Silver sparkly stars, of course):

FIA GT and DTM in GT5
^ FIA GT and DTM were planned for GT5. Would you have waited longer for GT5 just to include these two forms of motorsport?

FIA GT and DTM represent two of the most popular forms of motorsport in the world. The inclusion of both series will entail many more cars and perhaps even more tracks to race these cars on. These series would coincide with other real racing series featured in GT5 including NASCAR and the World Rally Championship. Authenticity, however, could depend on just how much Polyphony Digital would capitalize on using licenses for both FIA GT and DTM if featured in Gran Turismo 5.

FIA GT (GT1 and GT3 World Championships).

The FIA GT series (GT1 and GT3 World Championships) represent the pinnacle of production-based sportscar racing. This is where production-based sports cars heavily-modified for racing compete in frenzied road racing competition. This is where cars such as these are driven in anger across a worldwide array of tracks ranging from Formula 1 Grand Prix circuits to various other international racing circuits. To me, I initially thought of the FIA GT1 World Championship as the only part of the FIA GT package. However, I would be open to the possibility of FIA GT3 World Championship racing. The difference being that the GT1 machines are all world-class sports cars and supercars, and the GT3 machines as the lower-level (yet still competitive) sports cars.

Since the inception of the Gran Turismo franchise, GT racing has always been the cornerstone of racing in Gran Turismo. Featuring more of these real GT cars would truly enhance the greater scope of racing in Gran Turismo games with more GT cars.

DTM.

DTM, especially today's DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, not the former Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft), represent some of the most hard-fought racing with super-sophisticated super touring racing machines. You still get DTM-style racing machines, but many of them are mostly the carry-over cars from Gran Turismo 4. In fact, there are no real Premium DTM racing machines unless you count the Lexus IS-F Racing Concept. I even will admit that I'd love to race either a recent Mercedes-Benz or an Audi DTM race car.

It was announced in 2011 or so that BMW would make its return to DTM. A BMW DTM car for GT5 would probably be based on the concept that was unveiled in Munich in 2011. This car was the BMW M3 DTM Concept.

IN CASE YOU'RE INTERESTED: You can read more about the BMW M3 DTM Concept being unveiled, here is an article for you: "BMW Unveils M3 DTM Concept Car in Munich" - thecheckeredflag.com.

So now you have some insight on both FIA GT and DTM and why they would be welcome additions to GT5.

--- Gamers' Impatience/Acceptance of Delays ---

A lot of gamers are impatient. They are mostly the "gimme gimme gimme!" crowd who does not want to keep suffering through delays, almost as if getting a game as quickly as possible is more important than living life. A game delayed for too long runs the risk of not being as good. Two game examples include "Malice" and recently, "Duke Nukem Forever." Some people critical of delays for Gran Turismo games think that the wait for a Gran Turismo game is too long to come out not living up to certain lofty expectations set by certain gamers.

--- Would I Have Waited Longer for GT5? ---

Would I have waited a little longer to get Gran Turismo 5 just so FIA GT and DTM get included in GT5? If it meant making GT5 better (even if by a small percentage), then I'd wait. I want the best-possible model for GT5 with as little compromise as possible. FIA GT and DTM would make a great impact on GT5's car and racing lineups. If including these two series could improve GT5 by a substantial degree, then do whatever it takes to make your game great. Don't release a substandard, rushed title to represent the future of your franchise. Make the game as great as you can with all of your efforts. Other people will likely complain to the high heavens, but I'll wait. In fact- I never got my PlayStation 3 until June 2011. I got my PS3 along with GT5 on the day I got my PS3. It may not be likely I would have gotten my PS3 if I wasn't influenced that GT5 was released.

So what do you think? Would YOU have waited a little longer for GT5 for the opportunity to race FIA GT race cars and DTM race cars? Feel free to comment. Thank you for reading!

JGTS Salute to GTPlanet

John B. Marine | 11:36 PM | | Be the first to comment!
I want to make a JGTS salute to GTPlanet as my final post of 2011 for this blog. GTPlanet has been the only online community devoted to Gran Turismo that I have been a part of. I have been part of this message board since December 5, 2003. I had initially joined just to follow news on Gran Turismo 4. It has since blossomed to me making GTPlanet my favorite message board of any kind. It was my online message board home after having so many problems trying to get along with people on a long-defunct message board called Speedsims (where I've felt like crap and unwelcome to a number of people). I have seen and encountered many people of many walks of life post on this message board. Among the people of GTP, I have felt like family there. GTPlanet is literally its own planet with millions of people whom have joined the message boards and many more who read the latest Gran Turismo news. I have been more than pleased to encounter so many people.

Perhaps a strength of how strong the Gran Turismo community is was when I posted about the kiosk demo of Gran Turismo 5 back in 2010. I received SO MANY BLOG HITS from GTPlanet's news tidbit that I earned loads of readers in such short time. The hits came from all over the world and back. Even other message boards linked to my blog post on John's Blog Space. The hits came from almost everywhere- United States, Canada, Brazil, United Kingdom, most of continental Europe, Mauritus (an African island nation east-northeast of Madagascar), Australia, and New Zealand among many other places. I even try to get some casual readers from GTPlanet to visit "John's Gran Turismo Space."

I had already done one of these blog posts saluting GTPlanet back on "John's Blog Space." However, I want to salute GTPlanet here since JGTS is a more proper Gran Turismo environment than my "anything and everything" environment on John's Blog Space. The person I'd most like to thank is Jordan. Jordan is the founder and administrator of GTPlanet. I also salute the many Moderators for maintaining GTPlanet, keeping it fun and active. I am thankful for all of the many wonderful people worldwide whom I've gotten to meet on this site.

Are You Visiting JGTS from GTPlanet?

If you are visiting my blog from GTPlanet, let me welcome you to my GT-specific blog. I hope you enjoy your time here. Feel free to look around and see the many resources I've put together. Most of all, thank you for visiting!

Learn more about GTPlanet by visiting www.gtplanet.net. You can get social with GTPlanet by finding its Facebook fan page and its Twitter feed, all of which can be found on GTPlanet. I hope all of you have a happy and safe new year! Thank you for reading!

A Special Announcement

John B. Marine | 7:26 PM | | Be the first to comment!
I have a special announcement to make to all of my fellow Gran Turismo fans. Welcome everyone to "John's Gran Turismo Space!" I am humbled by your presence. Salutations aside, let me make my announcement right here in my GT blog:

I FINALLY have Gran Turismo 5 and a PlayStation 3!

This will give me an opportunity to finally make material for Gran Turismo 5. Please note that anything I create for GT5 and on GT5 will take some time as I am continually learning more about this game. I want to create the best experience in mentioning and discussing GT5. So therefore, I will keep playing GT5 and reserve any and all commentary and discussions regarding GT5 until I've gathered enough experience to professionally share material with all of you.

In addition, existing blog posts regarding certain elements of Gran Turismo will be edited to include information from my playing of Gran Turismo 5. This is to provide greater assurance to my readers.

Thanks to all of my readers for having patience with me. And also, thanks to all of you for reading!

Gran Turismo Career Focus - an Introduction

John B. Marine | 4:42 PM | | | Be the first to comment!
Gran Turismo is great, but in an effort to think on how to make Gran Turismo better, new ideas have to be considered. One must evolve and adapt to become better than before. That even includes going with new ideas and practices. One of them is an idea that can be a hot mess if done wrong- a proper Career Mode. As I've posted in the past, some feel the real racing aspect of Gran Turismo is in serious need of a makeover for the long-term future of the franchise. I am personally falling into that category of thinking that GT needs to evolve even more so in remaining that top-flight racing game franchise. This blog post is an introduction to a new series of blog posts I hope to unveil here on JGTS regarding a true Career Mode for Gran Turismo.

REMEMBER: I have NOT played Gran Turismo 5 yet, so I will not include any personal experiences of playing GT5 in this discussion.

--- The Point of This Blog Post ---
I have created this blog post to illustrate what I hope to discuss in a series of blog posts here on "John's Gran Turismo Space." Basic points will be expressed here followed by clarification in future blog posts.

About the Label:

For when a blog post in the series is posted, look under the label "Career Focus." Each post in the "Career Focus" label pertains to my own look at a career-focused element of Gran Turismo. I will discuss various aspects of a career-focused Gran Turismo because just one post isn't good enough to discuss this. I need to make multiple points and express things properly for my readers to get a proper understanding.

--- What Defines a Career Mode? ---
A racing career mode is defined in most part to whatever goal(s) is/are to be accomplished. To be a complete and proper racing career, a Career Mode must encompass various elements for which a successful racer is defined. A true career in the sense of rookie to legend depends on whatever tasks qualify as becoming a champion of racing. Are you to compete in a given championship for some amount of time? Are you to be in multiple championships?

Career Mode for any sort of racing game comes in a variety of elements and vary depending on the game. Gran Turismo has always been about the drive as well as the number of cars and what-have-you to enjoy racing to the max. One of the main criticisms people give about the Gran Turismo series is that the games have failed to truly deliver on the real racing front. For some, the simple Gran Turismo mode doesn't feel anything like a real racing championship despite all the racing you do.

--- Does Gran Turismo Need a Career Mode? ---
On two fronts, a Career Mode would either be beneficial or damaging. Beneficial that there is racing character to Gran Turismo, but damaging if you're a GT purist. A Career Mode would make Gran Turismo too linear. It would be too linear unless you find a creative way to sort out the races and the action.

Many racing games that have a Career Mode are mostly focused on one or more specific series or races. Other racing games like ToCA Race Driver 3 and RACE 07 (among MANY others) feature the feel of racing in multiple series. All of the real-life championships are basically built up on and based on actual series. Because you don't have as much leeway to race in just about any other series, you're almost essentially stuck to the kinds of cars you use in each championship along with all the different tracks you race on. That's why we have certain games that aren't restricted to only one racing series. That's also why we praise certain games that feature multiple series and the respective tracks raced on by the series in question.

Another challenge to a Career Mode is to try not to make it seem so much like Gran Turismo has a storyline. You don't want to ruin the joy you experience in the Gran Turismo universe with trying to focus establish a proper career. Gran Turismo should, and always should be about the cars and the racing. Trying to focus solely on careers more than racing makes it seem like the cars are unimportant. The ToCA Race Driver series, for example, is a lot more about actual racing and racing series than the cars. Of course, ToCA games were built on emphasizing real racing.

A Good Start...

Gran Turismo 5 and its kart racing is a good way to start a career. When you think about getting started as a race car driver, many race car drivers started off in kart racing. A smart way to set up a career-focused title is to highlight on kart racing. The idea of this is to showcase an up-and-coming driver racing on local tracks or being invited to major amateur-level racing championships. That's why I think the inclusion of kart racing is a great one for the Gran Turismo series.

...but After That?

You've proven yourself in the karting ranks... now what? Use your winnings from karting to purchase some crappy first car to compete in the Sunday Cup? Head right into the License Center to enhance your skills (or maybe try to do great enough there to win bonus cars)? For most racing games, you're already a real race car driver as you have all the licensing you need to compete in just about any race you see fit.

A lot of people who complain about having to do license tests probably feel like the game should start for real when you get a car and work your way up the ladder. But for me, each Gran Turismo is a new experience. Even if you think you know every nuance of the game, you still need to play the game through the License Tests (or do a good amount of Arcade races) to understand the nature of the GT you're playing.

As I have mentioned with a Career model, you may run the risk of making Gran Turismo a bit too linear. But if executed properly, you can make a Career Mode to be engaging and immersive while still maintaining the real character of the racing game (especially for established franchises like the Gran Turismo series).

--- What I Hope to Accomplish With This Series of Posts ---
I would like to share with you what I hope to accomplish in preparing this series of blog posts regarding a career model for Gran Turismo. These are some goals I hope to achieve in preparing these GT Career posts:

* intricately describe every nuance to have that "just right" model for a GT career
^ I don't want to just type up something on a Gran Turismo career; I need to explain everything so my readers get a proper understanding of what I am trying to discuss.

* provide insight from other games and real life in my explanations
^ While I am discussing the Gran Turismo series, insight from other games and real-life applications help drive home a better understanding of what is being mentioned.

* try to enact a model for a professional-type racing career using past practices from past GT games
^ If you're going to do a Career Mode, best do it right. I will use insight from past Gran Turismo games to help illustrate my point as well as speculate what GT would be like if it had a proper career model put into place.

* question various other aspects and "answer questions never asked"
I want to mention as many different points as possible as well as maybe think about things no one may ever consider regarding a career model for GT.

Having said all of this, I hope you enjoy my series on a proper Career model for the Gran Turismo series. One of my biggest hopes is that maybe this catches on and gives some insight to PD on how to structure the next Gran Turismo (or a future GT).

Most of all, I want more people to view and get involved with my content. Don't just visit and leave- let me know if you enjoyed my content! I have been editing JGTS more often apart from my primary blog. So please show some support! How am I supposed to know if I'm doing a good/bad job if you don't tell me?

Remember that all posts in my series on a Career Mode for Gran Turismo will be under the "Career Focus" label. Please use this label to find all of the blog posts in this series.

Thank you for reading! Get involved, people!
