Would Gran Turismo 4 Be Better Online?

John B. Marine | 5:30 PM | | | | | | Be the first to comment!
Early in its development, Gran Turismo 4 was supposed to be the first Gran Turismo with online multiplayer. Unfortunately, online play was not implemented for GT4. GT4 still ended up being an amazing game. However, could Gran Turismo 4 have been better had it actually implemented online multiplayer? This is more a commentary piece of mine than any educational material regarding GT4. So welcome to another post of "John's Race Space!"

Before I Begin...

Today (November 21) marks the anniversary of this blog named as "John's Race Space" from its original name of "John's Gran Turismo Space!"

Would Gran Turismo 4 Be Better With Online?

Gran Turismo 4 racing
^ from: (YouTube) - Could Gran Turismo 4 be better if it had online multiplayer, as previously promised?

Gran Turismo 4 had the early promise of being the first online multiplayer Gran Turismo title. Extensive work was done in preparation for this game to make its online debut. However, it was later reported that Polyphony Digital would drop the online play for GT4. This made GT4 as just another non-online GT title.

Just because Gran Turismo 4 lacked online play didn't mean people were unable to find workarounds. In fact, there was some pseudo online interactivity by connecting their PC to XLink Kai for LAN (local area network) play. Such methods give PlayStation 2 units the feeling of being connected online. People still somewhat managed to set up online multiplayer races in GT4 across LAN with this method.

In the classical sense, I always believe games should have a robust package offline and online. How much of a priority and of what level of importance online play is should be considered strongly outside of the base single player model. Do not make increased concentration of online play if a game's offline model is weak. A few differences in this would surface in later titles like Gran Turismo 5, Gran Turismo 6, and Gran Turismo SPORT. Let me go into further detail about this.

Gran Turismo 4 Offline and Online

This section delves into the deeper points regarding varying levels of concentration on offline and online content. Take a look.

Could GT4 Have Benefited from Proper Online?

The idea of an online-enabled Gran Turismo leads to having more replay value as you do not have to rely on only the in-game races. However, you may not have much to fall back on when the official servers are not active any longer. Think about when your Internet goes down or if your cellular phone coverage is down. What do you have to fall back on? If you do not have a reliance on online content, you have something interesting to fall back on. Conversely, if you do have a reliance on online content, a vast majority of content for that game ends up going kaput.

People could surely set up leagues and special races within Gran Turismo 4 to play online. Not having these online items would have cheapened Gran Turismo 4. Despite this, Gran Turismo 4 most has remained a solid Gran Turismo title. One of the advantages of online play is that you can take on actual human opposition instead of shoddy AI. Many a GT gamer have complained about overaggressive AI and rubber band AI in Gran Turismo games.

To me, the disappointments of this has led to some people finding other racing games, such as the upstart Forza Motorsport during GT4's development. One of those factors includes a lack of online multiplayer. People who mostly defected from Gran Turismo to Forza Motorsport at that time were more than pleased with what Forza Motorsport had to offer compared to Gran Turismo 4. A lot of games on the XBOX were tied religiously to XBOX Live, so you know you could enjoy solid competition anywhere in the world against people around the world. Since GT4 didn't have online play as promised previously, this meant most people had to settle for having local multiplayer without any sort of online connection.

Structure of Gran Turismo 4 With Online Play.

The disappointment of Gran Turismo 4 not having online multiplayer meant its would-be value was diminished. If Gran Turismo 4 had proper online multiplayer, it would open up two different avenues. Consider the following.

The first avenue would be how to structure Gran Turismo 4. Do you focus GT4 primarily on offline play while also offering a solid online model, or do you try to have an even balance of offline and online play? As long as you don't seem like you force people to play online to continue a game's lifespan, the game's appeal doesn't really take a serious hit.

The other avenue is on how to structure both an offline and online model of GT4. Could you possibly increase the concentration more on online play, leaving for a fairly weak offline system? Online play remains fun until the official servers are shut down. You don't want to leave someone with less of an experience with the single player as you probably could have with a combination of online and offline.

As evidence proven by the later Gran Turismo 5 and Gran Turismo 6, the thing I would fear most is for Gran Turismo 4 to lack a sufficient offline model since you are somehow relying on online play to be more paramount than offline play. Even Gran Turismo SPORT eventually adopted single player elements to offset its previous online-only game play model. Gran Turismo 4 is fairly deep with its Gran Turismo mode. GT4 would probably have a very weak offline mode if its concentration on online play is stronger than its single player elements. The good news is that the offline material doesn't have to be as detailed since you have online play to fall back on. Since you don't have as much to focus on in the offline realm, you can afford to not make action as stringent because some people enjoy the multiplayer experience more than the single player experience. Having both in a game extends the appeal and lifespan of that game. Online-only games are mostly dead once the servers are shut down.

Is Gran Turismo 4 Better Offline?

Even if Gran Turismo 4 lacked proper online play, is it better offline? I would argue it would be. Having an online model means you have to enjoy a game while it lasts. An online-enabled game is not likely to be enjoyed online for eternity as the servers are shut down. I am someone who sees online multiplayer more as a perk than a necessity. It is only a necessity if you feel it is needed the game has to have online multiplayer to keep its appeal. And to me, it is important to have a solid single player experience rather than rely on online play to keep it relevant and active. Online multiplayer should bolster a game, not carry it. There wouldn't be too much outside of online multiplayer if Gran Turismo 4 relied on online multiplayer rather than have a mix of offline and online.

People would still complain over most of the usual things regarding Gran Turismo 4 even with online multiplayer. For instance, people would still complain over the car list not having the big manufactures (Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, etc.), a lack of damage, weak sounds, shoddy AI, and stuff like that. At least GT4 having online play means you won't have to take on AI opposition all the time. It also means you aren't restricted to the original races set up by Polyphony Digital. It goes both ways.

I still think Gran Turismo 4 would be great with or without online multiplayer. I see online multiplayer more as a nice bonus rather than anything necessarily needed. GT4's model would have to be incredibly modified to make for a better experience of offline and online. All in all, maybe not having online play in GT4 was a GOOD decision as it could probably wanted to make a better online model for Gran Turismo than what was previously planned for GT4.

That's what I think about GT4 and online multiplayer. What say you? Feel free to comment! Thank you for reading! Take care and be well.

Tsukuba Circuit

John B. Marine | 9:23 PM | | | | | | | Be the first to comment!
Tsukuba Circuit packs so much track in its 1.287-mile space. This track debuted in Gran Turismo 4, and you can race its motorcycle layout in Tourist Trophy. You can find Tsukuba in Shimotsuma, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan; not too far north of Tokyo. This blog post offers a look at Tsukuba from the realm of Gran Turismo.

Can you believe this is my first blog post about any Gran Turismo track in over three years?

Tsukuba Circuit

Tsukuba Circuit
^ from: greasyblocks.com, by way of photobucket.com - Tsukuba Circuit and its almost 1.3-mile layout.

I blogged about this track in my main blog, "John's Blog Space." So the following advice applies to the in-game version as well. Read the old post of mine here: "Tsukuba Circuit" - John's Blog Space.

With all due respect, Tsukuba Circuit proves that you don't have to be some 12+ mile course to be an ultimate proving ground. Tsukuba is an intense proving ground despite its 1.287-mile length.

All of Tsukuba is really tough. The very first corner is absolutely one you must get right because it can set the tone for the rest of the lap. The two hairpins are both intense. The sharp corner leading to the Dunlop Bridge. is pretty sharp as well. Make sure to keep your racing machine stable after passing the Dunlop Bridge leading to the much sharper second hairpin. The outer portions of the track are high speed. That high speed, however, requires some braking on the very long final corner. Very fast cars can clear this course easily in less than a minute.

The motorcycle variation is a chicane that comes up as you cross under the Dunlop Bridge. That configuration extends the 1.271-mile length to 1.287 miles (2.070 km). This chicane is about as sharp as almost as blind as the chicane after the high-speed backstretch at Fuji Speedway (since its 2005 renovation).

Strategy.

You may want to tune for acceleration since this track is so short. Find a good handling balance for this course. Tsukuba has a little of everything turn-wise. You want something capable enough to take on the hairpins, but also something that doesn't snap on you with the sweeping long final corner.

On the motorcycle front, most of the same strategies apply. This track is infamous for its difficult Yamaha TS250 event in Tourist Trophy to try to unlock it. I will leave it up to you to try to clear that challenge in Tourist Trophy on this track.

Here is a look at the course from Gran Turismo SPORT:

Gran Turismo SPORT: Unveil Impressions

John B. Marine | 11:44 PM | | | Be the first to comment!
The Gran Turismo Sport Unveiling Event in London recently shown off the progress of Gran Turismo Sport. With little in the way of news previously, we now have plenty of ideas on how GT Sport has progressed in its development. We also can speculate on what could be with Gran Turismo Sport and what it has to offer. This blog post offers my thoughts on GT Sport based on what this Unveil event has shown.

NOTE: This blog post pertains to thoughts and impressions on Gran Turismo Sport after the recent unveiling ceremony. This is NOT any kind of review.

Gran Turismo Sport: Unveiling Event Impressions

It was May 19-20, 2016 that Gran Turismo Sport was unveiled in London, England, UK. To identify this post, I'll use this image (or find another one in case this one doesn't show):

Gran Turismo Sport
^ from: (YouTube) - Are you ready for a ride like this in the Gran Turismo universe?

Those bestowed with a PlayStation 4 will have themselves a Gran Turismo to look forward to. After many feel Gran Turismo 6 was completely boring and basically righted the wrongs of Gran Turismo 5, a number of fans feel the series is fading in appeal and in fun. Along comes Gran Turismo Sport to maybe bring back any lost fans and welcome new ones. The Gran Turismo Sport atmosphere features some influence from the FIA (Federacion International d' Automobile). In fact, there is even a Gran Turismo championship sanctioned by the FIA. This may end up being one of the true e-Sports today.

So before I go any further, I want you to view this video (or click on the link below the video):

^ "Gran Turismo Sport Gameplay Trailer Captured on PS4"

If Polyphony Digital feels they have lost a good amount of their audience for as long as Gran Turismo 6 has been around, then I feel a huge chunk of their fan base is going to return with GT Sport. A lot of what has been featured in this trailer is good indication Gran Turismo is anything but dead. I do love the TV-style presentation. You can surely complain about the same style sounds, but the look and feel of this title seems to be quite impressive. Some may even say this is what at least the racing aspect of Gran Turismo should have been from the very start.

This game looks to be a real evolution of the GT series even outside of the racing. A sad bit for some of us is that the game will feature some 130 or so cars, but some new machines will be featured. Among one of the newer cars featured? How about the ugly Ferrari LaFerrari (sorry- I don't like this car's looks all that much)? The game will incorporate a lot of different kinds of racing on tarmac and off-road. It is also said to have many different environments for taking pictures including various locales worldwide and various scenes. You could take fancy pictures with scenes such as Mt. Fuji in the background or even photograph your car with the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

If there is one thing I noted from the trailer, it was the inclusion of a livery editor. I felt like Gran Turismo 5 started something that would slowly get better. You could re-paint certain cars in GT5 by collecting paint colors. Gran Turismo 6 had it much better by allowing you to paint any car almost any color based on whatever colors you picked up. GT Sport has itself a livery editor. To some GT veterans, this is a feature we've long been looking for.

More detailed opinions of mine will be featured later in this blog post. For now, let's go to some talking points.

GT Sport: Talking Points

Now for some talking points.

Northern Isle Raceway?

When Gran Turismo 5 featured NASCAR, it was a sign that stock car racing was to be embraced in the GT series. Looking at this fantasy oval makes me wonder if maybe Polyphony Digital is a little more serious on trying to expand upon the oval racing appeal. Northern Isle Raceway is kind of like a fantasy Bristol Motor Speedway, only with less severe banking. It is like a Bristol that almost rides like Martinsville or Dover. Or maybe it's just Bristol but without the Bristol Motor Speedway licensing. This would complete the stock car racing package as the series doesn't have a proper short oval. Now, we seem to have that short oval with the inclusion of Northern Isle Raceway. Then too, you stock car fans can probably argue Gran Turismo could also use a one-mile oval in addition to what is already offered.

Tokyo Expressway.

I can already sense this course could be popular among online gamers and the highway battle set. Of course, this has to be at night to really be fun. I'm pretty sure you won't be battling the Thirteen Devils, 12 Zodiac, or even Kingdom Twelve though. I almost want to imagine racing this course kind of like racing the classic Ridge Racer games. I like it.

National Pride.

Individual success is always admirable, but there is NOTHING like playing for your country. I always feel you can gauge your performance best when you take on people from all over the world that specialize or compete in the same field that you do. What Gran Turismo Sport has to offer is a great platform for you to take on a world of opposition. I surely would represent the stars and stripes of the United States of America in my racing.

Only one thing concerns me here, mostly based on what I thought about with some people from the United Kingdom. Some folks from the United Kingdom don't want to affiliate themselves as competitors from the UK, but instead list themselves as racers from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and other places. This could be a problem with a few other places, but I've only seen this kind of problem with some United Kingdom folks.

More Cars?

The production cars and race cars are nice, but I want to imagine more kinds of racing, namely formula racing series (not exactly F1). Many people immediately will think Formula 1, but think of other series like GP2, GP3, Formula 3 (which I love), and even the Formula E series. It may also be possible to have something like the FIA World Touring Car Championship. I surely wouldn't mind some proper touring car action in the GT realm. Since GT Sport will also feature off-road racing, you can't forget about the FIA World Rally Championship. We could also speculate on if we'll get something like FIA World Rallycross. For some people, why not? Most of the rally racing us GT gamers have done is mostly on closed courses. It probably wouldn't be too tough to include proper rallycross racing ranging from the heat races to running Joker Laps.

If you're going to feature the FIA, why not sweeten the offer with more kinds of racing? Why not offer more kinds of racing machines? Some real formula racing machines outside of the Red Bull prototypes would surely be nice. What would be an absolute long shot would be the Gran Turismo series having a kind of racing never before experienced in a GT game: supertruck (as in the big rig trucks) racing, like with the FIA European Truck Racing series. Imagine trying to wrestle those big trucks on a race track! The FIA also sanctions drag racing, so imagine proper drag racing in this game through FIA drag racing. The extreme would be either the aforementioned Formula 1 or perhaps even endurance racing with the FIA World Endurance Championship.

I do realize this is not a proper simulation of all things FIA. However, I do think it would be interesting to have many more kinds of cars and many more kinds of racing.

Rules and Race Types?

When I saw one of the videos of GT Sport in action, I noted moments like Full Course Cautions. In certain racing games, screwing up the races with certain flags and rules can make the racing less fun. Even incidents not your fault end up getting YOU in trouble. I even played some of the EA Sports NASCAR titles to where some random incident ends up bringing out the Full Course Caution. I surely remember this playing "ToCA Race Driver 3." Gran Turismo doesn't have thug AI like a lot of Codemasters racing games I've played, but I'm sure it won't be that bad in GT Sport.

With race types, it is possible full race weekends or certain race rules would apply. For instance, you could have a race weekend that consists of multiple races or even certain rules. A rules example would be that the finishing order of Race 1 of a two-race event will be reversed for Race 2. So if you finished 3rd out of 16 cars in Race 1, your starting position for Race 2 will be 14th. We may even have a sprint race followed by a feature race.

The Gran Turismo We've Been Waiting For?

If you saw the video, you may have noted a livery editor. You may have seen all the different motorsports rules and racing and such. Gran Turismo Sport really seems like the Gran Turismo many of us have long wanted. Maybe this isn't like a traditional Gran Turismo, but there is definite promise this title will blow away all of us. There will still be a Gran Turismo 7. On the other hand, it seems quite like GT Sport may be the best spinoff of the GT series. Whether or not this will be the Gran Turismo we've been waiting for will likely be determined once GT Sport is released proper.

This is NOT Gran Turismo 7. I do wish the more favorable elements of GT Sport will trickle down into GT7, though. What this game has to offer for real will have to be pondered upon for when GT Sport is released proper.

Are there any other talking points I maybe have missed? Feel free to share in a comment.

GT Sport: Final Thoughts

Please remember these Final Thoughts of mine are based on a game still in development.

Based on what I've seen and what I've read, "Gran Turismo Sport" is what the racing side of Gran Turismo should have been from the very start. That feel of real racing environment along with some competitive racing action is why I think GT Sport is worth at least a look-see. I've had no problem with the casual style races in Gran Turismo games. While I don't want the GT series to be like any of the Codemasters racing games or any of the SimBin racing titles, the Gran Turismo series could benefit more with a more proper racing style environment. GT Sport looks to offer this sort of edge along with a handful of facilities and features to make this package incredible. Just the idea of a livery editor makes me feel like I could actually construct my own racing team within the game. That alone will help me to feel intrigued and connected as a motorsports enthusiast. I don't have a PlayStation 4, but this is surely a title I will want to get my hands on once it is released.

Most importantly, whatever GT Sport brings, I want to see the finer elements of GT Sport to go into Gran Turismo 7. The combination of traditional Gran Turismo elements along with whatever GT Sport provides should make Gran Turismo 7 perhaps the best Gran Turismo ever.

In Case You're Interested...

This post shows my initial thoughts on Gran Turismo SPORT, before we knew about these details from the unveil ceremony: Gran Turismo SPORT Thoughts (John's Race Space).

Those are my thoughts on Gran Turismo Sport as of this unveil ceremony.

A Gran Turismo Confession (Bonus Section!)

I haven't mentioned too many Gran Turismo topics lately because I admittedly have not really played much Gran Turismo since the slow news of GT Sport and the somewhat slow buzz of Gran Turismo 6. I will sort of admit I have been hoping GT Sport will maybe re-ignite my GT interests. Of course, it isn't that I gave up on the Gran Turismo series or anything. Let's just say I've entered a lull as a Gran Turismo fan.

Again- I don't have a PlayStation 4. If I did have one, I surely will get GT Sport when I get a chance to get the game.

That's it for this post. Let's start a discussion, if you like...

Are you looking forward to Gran Turismo Sport? Or do you think the game needs a lot more for you to be convinced?

GT Sport is told to be released sometime in mid-November 2016. So let's be sure this baby comes in around that time for us racing fans to enjoy it to the fullest. Thank you for reading! Take care and be well.

Gran Turismo SPORT Thoughts

John B. Marine | 1:28 AM | | | 1 Comment so far
Gran Turismo SPORT is in the works. This spinoff of the GT series features a collaboration between PD and the FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile). Not much is known currently about what the final product will provide. So for a post like this, all we can do is speculate and envision what we think GT SPORT will offer. I'll throw in my thoughts with this blog post here on my racing/driving game blog- "John's Race Space!"

About the Label: "GT SPORT"

This label consists of topics of, and relating to Gran Turismo SPORT.

Gran Turismo SPORT: Thoughts

This section simply details a number of thoughts I have in regards to Gran Turismo SPORT. Here is as much as I want to share here:

As Much as I Know...

Most of you know I try to research most of my material before I post. So having said this, here is as much as I know about Gran Turismo SPORT from research:

• spinoff of the GT Series with a partnership between Polyphony Digital and the FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile).
• another e-Sports gaming model.
• Nations Cup - race for your home country.
• Manufacturers Cup - pick a manufacturer and compete with that company's products to win.
• coming to PlayStation 4 (PS4).

Gran Turismo SPORT, which many people originally predicted would be Gran Turismo 7, can open any number of possibilities as far as we are concerned. My main storyline and focus have to do with just what this PD/FIA partnership will provide in the development of Gran Turismo SPORT. A lot of people would basically hope this is a hardcore racing experience among the Gran Turismo realm that is fairly deep and engaging. Skeptics will likely think Gran Turismo SPORT will be more like a glorified and modded Gran Turismo 6 rather than something that shows evolution of the Gran Turismo franchise. Who will be right depends on what the final game has to offer.

What I Think This Could Produce.

This is all speculation. Depending on how deep and how detailed this deal goes, we could see everything from a host of new machines, new tracks, and unique races. The FIA has an entire mess of championships spanning various kinds of racing series. Most people simply know the FIA for Formula 1 and the World Rally Championship (WRC). However, there are even events for FIA-sanctioned deals like the World Touring Car Championship, the World Endurance Championship, European Drag Racing, kart racing, and stuff like that.

The initial impression I want to envision is a variety of different racing machines. I think we may possibly get a lot of the latest racing machines across a number of different series from an array of motorsports disciplines. We may also get a combination of more real-world courses along with classic Gran Turismo courses. A long shot I can envision is possibly Gran Turismo SPORT including Base Model cars for which we could customize to make our own racing teams within the realm of Gran Turismo. It would surely make the experience of racing more interesting to have your own team along with the many different cars offered. My only uncertainty on the car and track front is if we will see more actually-licensed Formula 1 machines that we can race. I won't be bummed if we don't get more F1 cars, but it would help boost the game with that sort of appeal. I still think we may eventually just see Polyphony Digital make their own F1-style game that is a spinoff of GT much like Tourist Trophy was a motorcycle racing spinoff of the GT series.

On the racing front, we can imagine anything from certain real racing series like the FIA provides on real courses to fantasy championships in the Gran Turismo realm. So we could see anything from the FIA World Touring Car Championship race Apricot Hill and Midfield Raceway to maybe Formula 3 race around Monza and Cote d'Azur. If GT SPORT were to include rallying, they could go with something upgraded from the Gran Turismo 5 experience of rally racing on randomly-generated rally courses. Or maybe a combination of GT5's random rally courses with the precision provided in Gran Turismo 6 generated courses. We could even see racing action like with FIA World Rallycross. Everything from the usual rallycross madness to Joker laps would make for some fun racing. I personally love Formula 3, so there could be a model that could be enjoyable for F3 racing. It may also be possible for other racing series to be featured which have some FIA implications. For example, Super Formula (formerly Formula Nippon) can be raced for you to earn an FIA Super License. So imagine racing in a makeshift Super Formula championship to enhance your racing career and maybe earn a chance to race F1 cars, granted we get something even close to F1 in Gran Turismo SPORT.

For the most part, though, I may see this whole GT Sport thing simply be "Gran Turismo Academy 2.0," with many more kinds of racing. Making this like an e-Sport thing means there will be ample opportunities for us virtual racers to enjoy competitive racing action in the Gran Turismo realm, but with the prestige and glory of actual championship action sanctioned by the FIA. The possibilities are endless.

Could Something be Learned in the Future?

If Polyphony Digital were smart (I am not saying they are dumb), they will use elements from this game to perhaps spice up the Gran Turismo series with the still-in-development Gran Turismo 7. The impressions I seem to get from GT Sport indicate this could be an opportunity for Gran Turismo 7 to possibly be better on the racing front. These could be changes and additions that can enhance the actual racing in Gran Turismo games as well as some of the execution of race events in the game. My mindset is that I want Gran Turismo to evolve on the racing front while not being an exclusive racing game (like almost any SimBin racing game or most Codemasters racing games).

More importantly, I would like this to be a model towards a more diverse and engaging Career style game. Again- everything hinges upon how deep and engaging the game ultimately becomes. This game's appeal can range from what seems like a half-hearted mod for Gran Turismo, to a completely different game that offers GT style action, but providing a much different experience.

We Just Don't Know Enough at This Point...

Other than this, we'll have to wait and see what this Gran Turismo SPORT will provide to the masses. Not too much is known at this point (as of December 22, 2015). I think this game will not only be a boon to us virtual racers, but also further bolstering of the Gran Turismo series as the one of the finest racing/driving game franchises of all time. Even if GT Sport somehow becomes a bust or being worse than what it could be, you should have sufficient reason to follow this game.
